The thermal solution for server
The rapid development of the Internet brings the prosperity of the server market. A large amount of data storage and calculations need to be completed by the server, and large scale websites require huge number of servers to prevent the server collapse due to excessive traffic. We often see the huge server room composed of row servers.
Most of these servers need to run 24 hours uninterruptly. Therefore, we can see the huge heat would be generated, usually we will use air conditioner to cool down the temperature, or change the layout to dissipate the heat resonably. When the server system is overheating for a long time, we should turn off the system and transfer the data correspondingly.
The main types of thermal solution for server are air cooling and liquid cooling. For air cooling, the thermal medium is air, as the intergrity and power of the servers are increaing, so the air cooling heat sink often consist of heat pipes and aluminum fins, heat pipe is a two phase thermal component, which can conduct and transfer the heat very quickly, aluminum has excellent heat dissipation performance, so this combination takes the advantages of each components which can remove the heat from server CPU and dissipate it to the air rapidly. For liquid cooling, the thermal medium is water or other coolant, liquid cooling heat sink can solve most of the thermal problems, especially when cool down the temperature of server room, when air flow is not affordable, liquid cooling can control the server CPU to a very stable temperature, and has little noise.
